The Coffs Harbour Bypass project took a major step forward today with the first of 260 Super T concrete girders lifted into place over Newports Creek at North Boambee.
Several of these huge girders, which are locally produced at Australian Precast Solutions in Macksville, have already made the trip up the highway on their way to becoming part of 17 of the bridges making up the bypass route.
Transport for NSW Director Region North Anna Zycki said the project team is grateful to the local community for its patience while these massive bridge components travel along the highway.
“The specialist engineers at the Ferrovial Gamuda Joint Venture team, who are building the 14-kilometre bypass of Coffs Harbour, are all excited about this milestone in the project,” Ms Zycki said.
“It’s especially important for the local community, which is being supported by the local production of these girders.”
The bridge at North Boambee will be built using 10 of the Super T girders with the next bridge starting to take shape at the Korora Hill Interchange.
“Coffs locals can look forward to seeing many more of these bridges starting to take shape over the coming months,” Ms Zycki said.
“Motorists are reminded that with the movement of over-size over-mass loads through the city they need to ‘ACT’ as these large loads take up more space and are unable to stop quickly – be Aware, use Caution and allow more Time to get to your destination.”
The Australian and NSW Governments are funding the 14-kilometre Coffs Harbour Bypass.
When complete, the project will save motorists 12 minutes travel time, bypass up to 12 sets of traffic lights and remove thousands of vehicles from the Coffs Harbour CBD.
